The true finches are small to medium-sized passerine birds in the family Fringillidae. Finches have stout conical bills adapted for eating seeds and often have colourful plumage. They occupy a great range of habitats where they are usually resident and do not migrate. They have a worldwide distribution except for Australia and the polar regions.
Types of Zebra Finches :
Feeding
In nature, finches eat a diet that mostly comprises seeds. This has led some keepers to believe that finches can thrive on just seeds, but such a limited diet is no more healthy for a finch than an all-cheese diet would be for a person. The truth is that while finches eat a lot of seeds in the wild, they also eat a wide variety of other foods, including leaves, fruits, shoots, flowers, insects, spiders, worms, and other invertebrates. For the happiest, healthiest finch, you will need to provide him with a varied diet comprising seeds, pellets, fruits, vegetables, and possibly insects
My Experience on Feeding - Finch's Favorite food
As a finch breeder i tried providing them many variety of foods and came to know about what they like. Now I'm provide my finches with Different types of millet. The Millets i Provided Them are Foxtail Millet ( திணை ), BarnYard Millet ( குதிரைவாலி ), Little Millet ( சாமை). I also Provide them Spouted Moong Bean (பச்சை பயிரு) ,Spinach (கீரை) and Some fruits like apple, Carrots etc, occasionally.
Species and Mutation
There are many choices of finches to keep. The difficulty many finch breeders or hobbyists have is choosing which species to keep. There are very few people that will keep only one species of finch and even those people that do, usually pick a species that has different color mutations. There can be problems with maintaining too many different species, however. If you have mixed colonies, not all species will coexist in harmony. This sometimes takes some trial and error and a few plucked birds to figure out. Even if they do coexist, they will often interfere with each others breeding activities. Even mixing multiple pairs of like species can be trouble. Territorial species will sometimes fight to the death in the small area of an aviary. Unless you have unlimited cage space, the more species you add to your collection, the fewer numbers of each you can house and maintain. This can severely limit your ability to develop and sustain a line of birds. Yet, with all these disadvantages, few things are rewarding as having a mixed flight of birds coexist and produce their young in such a setting.
