Budgerigar / Parakeet - Species, Feeding and Evolution

The budgerigar  also known as the common pet parakeet or shell parakeet and informally nicknamed the budgie, is a small, long-tailed, seed-eating parrot. Budgerigars are the only species in the Australian genus Melopsittacus, and are found wild throughout the drier parts of Australia where the species has survived harsh inland conditions for the last five million years.

Evolution

The budgerigar is closely related to the lories and the fig parrots. They are one of the parakeet species, a non-taxonomical term that refers to any of a number of small parrots with long, flat and tapered tails. In both captivity and the wild, budgerigars breed opportunistically and in pairs.

Talking Ability - Budgerigar / Budgie / Parakeet

Perhaps no bird is chattier than the budgie/parakeet. In fact, a budgie/parakeet, named Puck, has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the "The Most Talking Bird” with a vocabulary of more than 1,700 words!

Feeding

In nature, Budgies eat a diet that mostly comprises on the seeds of spinifex, grass seeds, and sometimes ripening wheat, they also eat a wide variety of other foods, including leaves, fruits, shoots, flowers, insects, spiders, worms, and other invertebrates. For the happiest, healthiest bird, you will need to provide him with a varied diet comprising seeds, pellets, fruits, vegetables, and possibly insects
